I hope you dont mind, but Im going to begin this post with a poll. You are an educated and clever group, who have taught me alot, and I would love to know how you view the course of the 2024 Russian Offensive against Ukraine. I have a very simple question:

Btw, you would not be mistaken from finding this question tricky. Much of the reporting this year has focussed on what seems like inevitable Russian advances. There have been many stories of Russian strategic “successes” starting with the taking of Avdiivka and then recently the seizure of Vuhledar. There are also huge numbers of maps generated which have highlighted Russian advances—often in shocking color contrasts. Here, for instance is a series of maps, supposedly showing recent Russian advances in Ukraine.
