Since Donald Trump’s first term it has been widely stated he was keen to pivot to the Pacific and face down Chinese power in the region. It was one of the reasons we were widely told that Trump and his enablers wanted to cut aid to Ukraine, such as in this piece by Elbridge Colby put out by the Heritage Institute. In this brave, new Trumpian world, Ukraine was supposedly a distraction, a waste of US resources which were desperately needed in the Pacific to confront the Chinese behemoth that threatened the USA.

It was a fiction that, finally, the Trump administration has finally stopped spreading.
