Great conversation, why oh why don’t guys like this run for president of the US. We have become a nation being led by smooth talking actors and or grifters who care more about popularity than doing what needs doing to keep this nation safe and prosperous.

This was excellent. Watched it live and the General was a wonderful explainer for the civilians who subscribe to your substack.

The General has my greatest respect.

This was a remarkably good conversation and my thanks to both of you. In terms of the future, if it were me I would be thinking of how to do more with less rather than always assuming that more will always be better. I simply do not see how we can continue to spend so large a percentage of our GNP on the military without jeopardizing the wellbeing of the society we are purporting to defend. Currently (and for some time), the biggest threat to American democracy is manifestly from within, not from any external entity. If we do not spend the resources necessary to address our internal threats, there will be nothing left worth defending.

Interesting and understandable by regular Janes such as I!

When Gen Deptula mentions the liimited flying hours I have to think of the failures you described when Germany had to limit training for their pilots I WWII, in “How The War Was Won” and how this affected them to their detriment.. Excellent conversation, Phillips. I wouldn’t have understood it prior to reading your books, but now this is very informative and makes a lot of sense.

Deptula "talks his book" promoting manned military aircraft, which are obsolete (with the possible exceptions of cargo and medevac). Literally everything done by manned aircraft previously is now being done by missiles, drones, missile-drones, or unmanned remote-controlled aircraft, but cheaper and better.

The thought experiment: replace every fighter jet and bomber with an unmanned equivalent. Remove all the life-support stuff. How much faster, more maneuverable, longer-range, and higher-payload did you just make it?

Awesome. Thank you very much, it was truly illuminating. General Deptula has such a broad, deep and extensive knowledge of air power, its uses and limitations.
