Remember last year there was the constant talk that Ukraine was on the point of collapse and that the Russians were on the cusp of victory? Sure you do. One of the loudest voices for that was JD Vance. Vance, who from the very beginning was more than happy to sacrifice Ukraine to help Putin. This whole idea that Ukraine had no chance in the war, reached a fever pitch under the Trump Administration. It was Trump himself who claimed that Ukraine was doomed if the war went on—that it held “no cards” and that, laughably, it was Putin was was making a concession in not conquering all of Ukraine.

This idea of Ukraine being doomed has thus been hardwired into the Trump administration’s public discussion of the war—which why it was interesting to see how Vance altered his language yesterday. Now for Vance it was not a case of Ukraine being doomed or on the point of collapse—but that he was keen to stress the idea that Ukraine was not “winning the war” and that far from being triumphant, not it was Russia would would not collapse.
