Did You Know History Would Be Different If Zelensky Had Worn A Tie?
The Collapse of Conservative Thought In One Article
Hello All,
Everything would have been different if only Volodymyr Zelensky had worn a tie. If Zelensky had had the sense to dress better, in a manner appealing to Donald Trump, US aid would still be flowing in large quantities to help the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom. Moreover, the Trump Administration would not be reaching out to Russia to normalize relations and allow large numbers of Russian spies back into the United States. The Trump administration would also certainly not be planning to end sanctions on the Russian economy and would never be working to let major Russian oligarchs get back to business with the USA.
It was the most important sartorial choice in history.
This, of course, is a nonsense argument. Trump’s pivot to become an ally of Putin started long before the Oval Office meeting between himself and Zelensky. What we are witnessing is a process that started months, arguably years before.
The tragedy is that erstwhile conservative supporters of Ukraine in the USA are reduced to making such ludicrous arguments because they cannot, just cannot, bring themselves to admit the truth. This truth is that what we are seeing is what Trump was, is, and will always be. Conservatives have so undermined the credibility of their own thought, that they are left making the most ludicrous arguments instead of honestly admitting what they and conservatism as a movement, has come.
Basically conservatives have no intellectual stance now, except to not offend Donald Trump and to praise him as loudly as possible. An intellectual tradition that stretched back, to Burke, Acton, the Austrian School, Buckley, Rand, etc, has evolved into a movement whose sole purpose is to massage Donald Trump’s ego.
The collapse of conservative thought has been a steady accumulating process over the last 9 years, but has now reached the state of intellectual rubble. This can best be seen in an op/ed recently published by Marc Thiessen in the Washington Post—in which the author strains every intellectual fibre to blame all of Trump’s transgressions on Zelensky while exonerating Trump of all blame.
