A Possible Intervention: China is a Great Power: Fateful Choice
Thanks to everyone for their feedback. This was the choice of two-thirds in the poll, and its a question that I think is terribly important. I’m writing this not as a Chinese policy expert (because I’m not) but from the point of view of how China could shape the war and what the results might be of Chinese policy.
A Possible Intervention
The public statement by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that the US now believed that China was on the verge of providing major military support to China was (potentially) the most important international development in the Russo-Ukraine war for months. The Russia-China “forever” friendship, which was announced before February 24, 2022, has provided Russia with certain benefits to this point, but not in the area that the Russians really need—which is in significant loads of military equipment and supplies.
Going back to March, April May, there were signs that the Chinese were reluctant to supply much military support for Russia, and saw this war as a disaster that would best end soon.
