A Plan for the Democrats to Choose a New Nominee:
How to take advantage of Trump's weaknesses and re-energize the Campaign.
Hello All,
Sorry for two political pieces this week. I will get back to the Indo-Pacific next week and Mykola and I are recording a new Ukraine-Russia podcast on Thursday (which I hope will be out Friday). So there will be a detailed assessment of the situation in Ukraine for you then and over the weekend.
Biden Needs to Announce he is not Running
However the number 1 issue this week remains the fate of the Democratic Party and its quest to select a candidate to run against Donald Trump. Though there have been attempts by the Biden camp to play down the results of the disastrous debate last week, those efforts are failing. There are strong signs that many in the party want to change nominees—from opinion polls, to a large number of planted stories about Biden’s supposed mental decline, to some terribly frightening polls that show how much trouble Biden is in.
Also my guess is that the controversial supreme court decision on presidential immunity only adds to the pressure. It reinforces for people in the party (and the country) how much is at stake and how important it is that Trump get defeated in 2024.
Maybe the most distressing thing is that the Biden White House is basically admitting that their man cannot campaign. Why do I say this? Well the debate was now 5 days ago and what have we not seen? We have not seen Biden giving unscripted press-conferences, speaking extemporaneously, going around the different networks to show that the debate was a one-off. In fact we have seen the opposite. One scripted event with a teleprompter (to which people drastically over-reacted) and then a retreat into a bunker.
If Biden could truly campaign freely and easily, he would have been screaming it from the rooftops. But clearly he cant. Moreover, the White House wont even allow for a live broadcast of his upcoming interview with George Stephanopolous. It will be shown on delay—allowing for editing.
The White House is screaming loudly and clearly that they don’t trust Biden to function as a normal candidate. And that being the case, he must do what is best for the country, and his historical reputation—and step aside.
Trump is beatable—but Biden is not the Person to do it.
